Facts About Leicester City

All about Leicester

Leicester is a city and unitary authority area in the East Midlands of England, and the county town of Leicestershire. The city lies on the River Soar and at the edge of the National Forest. In 2015, Leicester had a population of 329,839 making it the most populous municipality in the East Midlands region. The associated urban area is also the 11th most populous in England and the 13th most populous in the United Kingdom. Leicester is at the intersection of two major railway lines—the north/south Midland Main Line and east/west Birmingham to London Stansted Cross-country line; as well as the confluence of two rivers: the Soar and Granby Canal.

Leicester is a city rich in cultural diversity with over 40% of its residents being from an ethnic minority background. Leicester is also home to a large student population with Leicester University and De Montfort University both located in the city.

Leicester is famous for its deep historic routes such as the discovery of the body of King Richard 111 in a carpark in September 2012. After the war of the roses his body was buried in Leicester Greyfriars church Leicester which was demolished after its destruction in 1538. When his Skeleton was found, an archaeological investigation and DNA testing helped verify this was Richard 111. He now lays to rest in Leicester cathedral. There is now a visitors centre which tells the story of King Richard 111 life and death and displays his original burial site. The ruins of Leicester castle where Richard would have spent his last days are in Castle gardens near the river Soar.

Leicester is famous for its football team, Leicester City who won the English Premier League in 2016 against all odds. Leicester is also known for its annual Leicester Comedy Festival which is one of the largest comedy festivals in the UK

The origins of Leicester can be traced back to the time of the Roman Empire when it was known as Ratae Corieltauvorum. Leicester later became an important medieval market town before growing rapidly during the industrial revolution. Today Leicester is a vibrant and multicultural city with plenty to offer visitors and residents alike.

Leicester was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 as Ledecestre, the spelling of the name in use until the 17th century. Leicester appeared in nine episodes of Doctor Who, more than any other city outside London. It was also one of the first cities to have a Jewish mayor, Isaac Lunzer, who served from 1837 to 1839.

The economy of Leicester is dominated by the service sector, with an emphasis on distribution, retail and transport; manufacturing also has a strong presence in the city. Hinckley Point C nuclear power station is currently under construction in nearby Somerset. With Hinckley Point B nuclear power station just over 15 miles (24 km) away in Bridgwater, Somerset, Leicester could become one of the few cities in the world with two nuclear power stations within its boundaries. Leicester Tigers are the city's rugby union club, who play their home games at Welford Road, and are the 2017/18 Premiership Rugby champions.
